Safe Haven
‘Safe Haven’ is a series of portraits of pregnant women who know their baby will be born with Down’s syndrome. Despite the fact that 92% of women will choose to abort a foetus with Down’s syndrome at any stage of pregnancy these women have chosen to continue.
For them the illusion of control over reproduction has been shattered. At a time when they are most vulnerable, these women have faced and accepted their natural fate. To let go of our defences is to surrender and embrace the unexpected change of direction that our lives will inevitably take. For me the photograph is a mirror for a psychological state, rather than only a document of the event.
